SAPOHR welcomes Zuma media parole, says more should be granted

The South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights (SAPOHR) says it has no reason to doubt the decision to place former president Jacob Zuma on medical parole.
The Department of Correctional Services confirmed on Sunday that it had granted Zuma medical parole.
He is serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court.
Spokesperson Golden Miles Bhudu says other prisoners with similar or worse medical conditions should be pardoned.
“SAPOHR has got no business, neither the capacity nor the brains to doubt the recommendations made by a medical practitioner, that led to the national commission of the DCS, to ignite and borrow wisdom from Section 75(7)(a) of the Correctional Services Act 111-1998.
“It is also factual as alluded by the DCS of Correctional Services, earlier that Medical Parole is an option available to all Sentenced Prisoners provided they meet all the requirements.
“Needless to say SAPOHR, hope that this particular incident would, as from today, and not a day later afford other less fortune Prisoners, who are in similar or even worse medical circumstances, the same treatment, though.
“Our experience over many years post-1994, was and remain, negligence, arrogance and abuse of power and office within vorrectional authority to implement Section 75 of the Correctional Services Act,” says Bhudu.
