September marks police safety month, highlighting the difficult and dangerous conditions officers face in the line of duty.

On 1 September, SAPS honoured the 27 police officers who died on duty during the past 12 months.

This brought the number to 66 police officers killed on duty in the past two years.

SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says since April 2023, 263 suspects have been arrested in relation to police killings.

Seventy-five of the suspects were convicted.

“We are praying for God to intervene, to prevent the ongoing attacks on our police officers, and we will be praying for the mental health of our officers. We have had challenges where members commit suicide,” said Mathe.

“We will also pray for the safety of South Africans, for God to safeguard the people of this country.”
