National Commissioner Fannie Masemola handed over the facility to the community in Sonskyn on Tuesday.

During the handover, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia hailed the community, saying their persistence in calling for increased police presence was the reason for the building of a police station.

Cachalia told the police officers to serve the community and honour their oath.

"The police are doing their best to improve safety in this community; whether there is a success in crime reduction, that will depend on the community," said Cachalia.

Masemola urged officers to serve the community to the best of their ability, while warning residents not to resort to destruction of property in times of frustration.

"If you burn this police station, we will never build another one.

"If citizens have issues with the police, they should report to the provincial commissioner and not destroy the station," said Masemola
