Saray Khumalo waits to return to SA
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
South African mountaineer, Saray Khumalo, is still waiting for an opportunity to return back home after her historic summit on Mount Everest on Thursday.
The 47-year old Khumalo is still at the Everest base camp, where flights are full.
Khumalo's friend and mountaineer, Erika Gibson, says the delay is caused by the peak season at Everest.
"The traffic is quite severe as far as the availability of flights in and out. Saray is trying to get space in one of the helicopters to the closest airport being Lukla," says Gibson.
Gibson adds that it will take Saray about a day or two to get to a connecting flight to South Africa where her family is anxiously waiting for her.
"We do believe that in the next two days she will be able to make her way to Kathmandu airport where she will be able to check the availability of flights back to South Africa."
Saray has also learnt of the death of two of her teammates, Seamus Lawless and Narayan Singh, while they were descending.
