SARS destroys R17m worth of illicit cigarettes
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has destroyed 2000 boxes of illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R17.4 million.
The organisation says the cigarettes were either imported or manufactured illegally in the country.
SARS’ Beyers Theron says the seizure and destruction was part of government’s efforts to deal with illicit trade.
“Other sectors that are severely impacted by illicit trade, and that form part of the SARS focus, include clothing & textiles, poultry, second hand vehicles, gold and scrap metal. Then there are unregistered medicaments which are supposed to treat various health ailments, but have not been scientifically tested.”
SARS also reported a 100% increase in the 2019/2020 financial year that trifled 445 seizures worth R103.5 million.
Most cigarette seizures occurred at Beitbridge, Groblers Bridge, Kopfontein, Lembombo and Skilpadshek border posts.
