SA’s Covid-19 positivity rate falls below 10%
South Africa has recorded a positivity rate of 9.3% in new Covid-19 cases on Monday – the lowest since the country entered the fourth wave at the end of last year.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reports there were 1 691 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24-hour cycle.
Gauteng continues to record the most infections at 456 new cases.
“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng Province (27%), followed by Western Cape (19%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 17%; Mpumalanga accounted for 11%; Limpopo and North West each accounted for 7% respectively; Free State accounted for 6%; Eastern Cape accounted for 5%; and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new cases,” says the NICD in a statement.
There has been an increase of 114 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 7 700 people currently admitted in both private and public health facilities.
Meanwhile, National Department of Health has reported another backlog in Covid-19 mortality cases.
This is due to the ongoing audit exercise by the department.
The department reported 87 deaths and of these, 25 occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours.
This brings the total fatalities in SA to 93 451.
On the vaccine front, 86 119 vaccine doses were administered on Monday.
