Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The monarchy has abandoned its driving ban for women.
Saudi Arabia will allow women to drive, state media has reported, citing a royal decree.
"The royal decree will implement the provisions of traffic regulations, including the issuance of driving licenses for men and women alike," the Saudi Press Agency says.
Saudi Arabia is a Muslim monarchy governed by Shariah law (Islamic law).
The decision brings to an end a longstanding policy that forbid women to drive in the Islamic nation.
The policy change will come into effect in June next year.
Some have hailed it a human rights victory.
