Security guard killed in East Rand Mall shootout
Police have confirmed a security guard was shot and killed during a shootout between
wanted suspects and police at the East Rand Mall on
Friday.
Captain Mavela Masondo says police were following up a tip-off when the suspects opened fire.
“We were following up on information about wanted suspects. The information led us to East Rand Mall. Upon approaching the suspects they started shooting at the police and we shot back. A security officer who wanted to assist the police to apprehend the suspects was shot and died at the scene.”
One suspect was arrested, another suspect was shot and wounded and three suspects are still at large.
“During the shootout there was a lady shot in the cross fire, she was shot on the lower body and transported to hospital,” he adds.
Masondo says there was no robbery at the mall.
He says the mall will remain closed as police are still investigating.
