Police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 75-year-old woman was injured after being hit by a bullet allegedly fired at the funeral of Kebby Maphatsoe.

Maphatsoe was laid to rest at the Westpark cemetery on Sunday.

Mourners at the late uMkhontu we Sizwe (MKMVA) president fired random shots into the air to celebrate his life.

Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo said they are also investigating a case of malicious damage to property after a nearby house was damaged.

"All these cases will be investigated, those people identified in the investigations that are responsible for contravening the lockdown regulations, for firing the shots as well as the attempted murder case on the 75-year-old woman will be brought book."

Naidoo said they are investigating four cases in total.

No arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, the ANC has called on the police to act against the people who fire shot randomly in public.

"To fire a firearm into the air at a funeral or built-up area, anywhere is a criminal offense. We hope that the authorities take firm and decisive action, it is wrong, it is not a mark of respect to fire a gun into the air and you don't know where that bullet is going to land. Whoever does that should be charged criminally, and we hope that will happen." said deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte during a press briefing on Tuesday.
