Gauteng have been experiencing a significant backlog in driver’s license renewals since last year.

This was confirmed by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on Friday at a press briefing.
CEO Makhosini Msibi says only 38% of driving licenses have been renewed by motorists.
“If you look at Gauteng comparatively to all other provinces, if we can deal with Gauteng the backlog throughout the country is far less.

“If you then take in terms of Gauteng, you will realise that Gauteng is sitting at 38% so there is a backlog of 62% which we are supposed to be dealing with in terms of the Gauteng scenario.”
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, who was also present at the briefing, said corruption is to blame for the backlog.
“Learner and driver licensing remain a pervasive challenge especially in Gauteng.
“The difficulties experienced by citizens in booking slots in the online booking platform is serious and a cause for concern.
“We are greatly concerned that preliminary investigations suggest that corruption is the principal driver in the availability of booking slots in the variety of DLTCs across Gauteng.”
