The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has uncovered what it believes could be a dodgy personal protective equipment (PPE) tender.

It’s understood the department irregularly appointed a service providers to supply 50 000 masks to the tune of R1.2 million.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says the service provider supplied the masks at an inflated price.

“We have also not found facts that the service provider has indeed delivered the masks.

Kganyago adds the SIU is ready to kickstart civil proceedings.

“Disciplinary action against an official was recommended and we are also going to brief council to try and set aside the contract and try to recover any loss that may have been suffered.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa has also signed a proclamation authorizing the SIU to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration in the affairs of KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport.
