Sizakhele Dyantyi appointed new Western Cape Police Commissioner
Lieutenant-General Sizakhele Dyantyi has been appointed as the new Provincial Police Commissioner for the Western Cape.
The veteran police officer takes over from Thembisile Patekile, who retired last month.
His appointment comes at a time when the province is grappling with mass shootings and escalating gang violence.
Over the past weekend, 11 people were killed in separate shootings across Cape Town.
"He takes over leadership at a time when this province continues to confront one of the country’s most complex crime environments," said Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane.
"The appointment comes against the backdrop of another painful weekend in which eleven lives were lost in separate violent incidents in the city of Cape Town. The challenge before the incoming Provincial Commissioner is therefore both significant and urgent," she said.
Dyantyi has previously served as a Station Commander, Cluster Commander, and Provincial Head of Crime Prevention for the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.
The new provincial commissioners for Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga will be announced later this week.
