Skweyiya: An end to a golden political era
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The African National Congress
(ANC) has lost yet another giant of the struggle against the oppression
of African people, says Deputy President David Mabuza.
Mabuza was addressing mourners at former cabinet minister Zola Skweyiya’s official special memorial service in Pretoria on Wednesday.
Skweyiya died at the age of 75 on April 11.
His passing came shortly after the death of struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
“With his passing, our country has lost a fine revolutionary, an upright human being and a true servant of the people,” says Mabuza
The deputy president says Skweyiya’s death marks a critical turning point in the country’s political history.
“It is time when we losing the generation of outstanding leaders that made an immense contribution to our freedom.”
He adds Skweyiya leaves behind a rich legacy behind which all South Africans should seek to emulate.
“Throughout his life, he performed extraordinary feats because he was driven by a deep sense of social justice, care and love of his people. It was his deep hatred for racial oppression and injustice that inspired his life-long activism.”
Mabuza says Skweyiya was a deep thinker and a rational person who remained loyal to his party and country.
“But he was also independent minded, but careful nonetheless as to how he expressed himself.
“He succeeded in serving our nation with distinction … his enthusiasm for their dreams and aspirations was unsurpassed."
Mabuza described Skweyiya as a living personification of fairness and justice.
“Because of his passion for life and deep love for his people, he became a revolutionary cadre par excellence. He epitomised a cadre of unquestionable loyalty and dedication to his people.”
Skweyiya funeral service is expected to take place on Saturday. President Cyril Ramaphosa had declared a special official funeral category 1 and is expected to deliver the keynote address.
