Smart tech to boost Joburg traffic enforcement, police response
The City of Johannesburg and its metro police service have launched what it describes as cutting-edge technology to enhance traffic law enforcement and increase police visibility.
Electronic handheld devices, a state-of-the-art new vehicle fleet, and Vumacam’s Automatic Dispatch Solution were introduced at the Grasmere Toll Plaza on Friday.
The Android-based electronic handheld devices allow the officers to detect stolen or fraudulently registered vehicles in real-time, issue notices in two to three minutes, and record accident reports in five minutes.
Joburg Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku said the new fleet of vehicles will assist the JMPD’s capacity to enforce traffic regulations, respond to emergencies, and increase police visibility.
“Vumacam’s Integrated Automatic Dispatch Solution will enable real-time automated dispatch of JMPD and EMS vehicles from the Integrated Intelligence Operations Centre on verified alerts, which will improve response times and improve public safety outcomes,” he added.
“The JMPD's launch of electronic devices, a new vehicle fleet, and Vumacam’s Integrated Automatic Dispatch Solution marks a significant step towards a smarter, more efficient, and safer Johannesburg.”
