Smooth start to Gauteng education's online admissions
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Gauteng Department of Education’s online application process for grades one and eight managed to process just over 45 000 applications in the first hour.
The system went live on Monday morning.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi joined scores of parents at the Atteridgeville Community Hall to oversee the process.
“Within the first 30 minutes of opening our online registration process, we managed to register almost 37 000 parents who felt that the future in now online,” he said. “We are excited as a department because this is a very important process that we undertook and I want to thank the department of Home Affairs, the HOD (Head of Department) and the team that is working on this process.”
Lesufi believes the online system will make education more accessible.
“The reason why we have chosen the online process as a department is very simple. We wanted all our people to get equal access to quality schools.
“Previously you would go to a school, while you are still outside the security guard would tell you that the school is full even though it wasn’t full,” he said.
Parent Nomsa Mashiane said the system was very efficient.

“I feel so happy because when I was home this morning I thought I was going to wait for a long as I was expecting long queues, but when I got here it only took five minutes.”
Mashiane said her son will be able to attend the school of choice.
“I have just received an SMS that they have accepted him,'' she says.
