The first day of online applications for grade 1 and 8 has gone relatively smoothly, according to the Gauteng Department of Education.
Online application begun on Thursday morning.
The department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona says some 68 000 applicants rushed to secure a spot at various schools for the 2021 academic year.
The online system experienced did experience some glitches, Mabona admits.

“It must also be noted that the identity verification was a challenge in the few minutes and was quickly sorted,” he says.
“Some parents received SMS confirming their applications with blank reference numbers, and as such we have resolved the challenge. We will resend reference numbers to all of them today.”
The OTP system, which was introduced as an added security feature, has also been cancelled.
“Please note the OTP was introduced as an added security feature, and unfortunately we experienced challenges and that feature was overwritten, so is cancelled,” says Mabona.
