Snow 'still possible' as Gauteng temperatures plummet
Updated | By Nomfundo Twala
Gauteng residents have been warned to prepare for severe weather and sharply colder temperatures, with the South African Weather Service issuing Yellow Level 2 warnings for parts of the province.
The warning covers severe thunderstorms and damaging winds over southern Gauteng, with the damaging wind warning also extending into parts of Mpumalanga.
Forecaster Tokelo Chiloane says temperatures are expected to drop significantly on Tuesday.
“Tomorrow we are expecting these temperatures to be significantly lower, maximums not reaching 10 degrees, especially over Johannesburg as well as Vereeniging.”
Chiloane says Gauteng can also expect isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.
While the possibility of snow remains very low, it cannot be ruled out in the coldest parts of the province.
Johannesburg, Vereeniging and areas around the East Rand could potentially see snow, although the Chiloane says the probability remains low.
Chiloane says the cold conditions are being maintained by a high-pressure system moving in behind the cold front.
“At this moment, the system that is coming behind the cold front, which is called a high pressure system, is the one which is going to retain the cold temperatures for the next several days.”
Rainfall probabilities are expected to decrease from Wednesday, while temperatures should gradually increase towards the end of the week.
Chiloane says the weather systems responsible for the current conditions will gradually move out of the country, leaving the cold behind before temperatures begin to recover.
