Social development shuts down illegal creche after Alex toddler burnt with boiling water

The Department of Social Development in Gauteng has shut down the Stepping Stone daycare centre in Alexandra, Johannesburg, following an incident that left a toddler severely burnt earlier this year.
It’s understood the boy sustained the injuries when a teacher at the creche allegedly used boiling water to clean him after he soiled himself.
Following site visits by the department, the day care was found to be operating illegally.
“In terms of Section 80(1)(a) any person or organisation may establish or operate a partial care facility provided that the facility is registered with the Provincial Government where the facility is situated,” said the department’s spokesperson Feziwe Ndwayana.
“Furthermore, in terms of Section 95(1)(a) any person or organisation providing an Early Childhood Development Programme must register the Programme with the Head of Social Development.
“In light of this, Stepping Stone Day Care Centre is found to be in contravention of Act 38 of 2005 of the Children’s Act.”
Ndwayana added the daycare will be given 10 days to affect the closure.
“Within the next ten days, the Department of Social Development commits to engage the parents of the children attending Stepping Stone Day Care Centre to assist with supporting the process of moving their children to alternative Registered Partial Care Facilities in the area.”
The teacher at the creche now faces charges of attempted murder.
