Soldier arrested for illegal cross border dagga smuggling
The Hawks have arrested three suspects, including a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), for allegedly dealing with dagga in the North West.
The suspects aged between 24 and 39, were arrested in Mahikeng on Monday.
It is alleged that the trio illegally smuggled dagga from Swaziland and supplied it to the market in Mahikeng and surrounding towns.
Hawks spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, says further evidence suggests that the suspects are allegedly also involved in money laundering activities.
"In February this year, the main suspect was arrested for possession of dagga worth approximately R600 000 where he was also charged with dealing in dagga and has now been allegedly linked to money laundering activities," says Rikhotso.
Two BMWs, two Mercedes Benz vehicles, a Corsa and a VW Polo belonging to the suspects, as well as bags of dagga were also seized.
The suspects will appear before the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday facing charges of dealing in dagga and money laundering.
