Motlanthe has addressed the launch event of the newest member of Oxfam Confederation at Constitutional Hill on Africa Day.

The former president says South Africans are increasingly becoming worried about their future amid the ongoing political crisis.

"It is critical that the hop for the future is not extinguished and that we do not sink into the dejected stagnation of apartheid," says Motlanthe.

Motlanthe says African liberation parties have in the past proven capable of changing the course of history.

"As they have taken up office, many have regrettably fallen into the seams of incumbency, forgetting that they remain accountable to the people who put them in office and are responsible for delivering constitutionally mandated services," says Motlanthe.

Motlanthe says politics of patronage, state capture and corruption is taking away progress for the downtrodden.

"The government and the state are respectively being abused towards kleptocratic ends. State resources are being used for personal gains and personal networks are having devastating consequences for our economy."

He says the country's politics is being dominated by discussions of state capture and corruption.

"It goes against the fundamental tenants of democracy, as it shapes the foundations of a society meant to be founded on equality, freedom and justice."
