South Africa’s Covid-19 death toll has climbed to 13 after a 60-year-old man also suffering from cancer succumbed to the virus.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirmed the latest statistics at an event in Sandton on Tuesday.
The country has also seen an increase of 62 infections since Monday.
“Today we have an increase of 62, so the total comes to 1749. It has gone up and unfortunately, we have recorded the death of a man in Parklands Hospital in Durban who was 60 years old and had stage 4 prostate cancer.
“It was a very debilitating condition. He was in hospital, but was earlier in another hospital at St Augustine,” said Mkhize.
Mkhize admitted there is some concern over the death toll at St Augustine’s Hospital.
Tests were conducted on staff and patients following the deaths of four people with coronavirus.
“We have had four of the deaths in KZN happening in the same hospital,” said Mkhize.
“We then ordered that there should be tests in a number of people who worked in this hospital. They have tested over 300 people and we ordered that all health staff be tested. So far, we have 66 people who have tested positive. Amongst them are 48 health workers, the other are patients.”
The hospital has been accused of failing to protect staff and patients amid the crisis.
