Soweto power outage 'no impact' on health services
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Gauteng Department of Health on Wednesday said there had been no interruption to services in Soweto following a fire at the Zola substation.
The fire led to an outage that affected electricity supply to Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital in Jabulani, as well as the Tladi and Zola clinics.
The department's spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the facilities kept the lights on through generators.
"Contractors are on site doing an assessment at Zola Community Health Centre after the generator there packed up.
"In the meantime, services from this clinic are diverted to nearby facilities, namely Mofolo Community Health Center and Chiawelo Community Health Center.
"The department is closely monitoring the situation. At this stage services are continuing as per normal.
Eskom blamed the fire at the substation on vandalism.
It led to power outages in large parts of Soweto, including Dobsonville, Naledi and Jabulani, Mofolo north.
