A security guard accused of sexually assaulting at least 87 schoolgirls now also faces rape charges.
This emerged at the suspect's first court appearance in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
The 57 year-old made a brief appearance in court - where the case was postponed to 25 October for further investigation.
NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, says despite 87 pupils coming forward, only 15 have given statements.
"Within the docket we have 15 statements that were obtained by forensic social workers from the Teddy Bear Clinic. We can also confirm that we have 87 learners who are willing to come forward and give statements.
"From the 15 learners we managed to derive eight charges, three of rape and five of sexual assault," Mjonondwane says.
The accused will be detained at the Orlando Police Station.
The state has asked for an identity parade to be conducted during this time.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi was at the court.
"We have confidence in the system and we appreciate the work of both the prosecuting team and also the Teddy Bear Clinic and other NGOs who are helping in managing this process," he says.
