St Stithians College mourns two learners found dead in Sabie
St Stithians College is mourning the deaths of a pupil and a former pupil, whose bodies were discovered at a lodge in Sabie, Mpumalanga, on Monday.
The victims have been identified as Ethan Coetzee, who matriculated from the school in 2025, and Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, a Grade 11 learner.
Mpumalanga police said there is currently no indication of foul play, although investigations remain ongoing.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
"Police have opened an inquest docket for investigation after a male and female were found deceased at a lodge in Sabie on Monday, 03 August 2026. A postmortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death."
The school has expressed deep sadness over the loss.
In a statement shared on its Facebook page, St Stithians Girls’ College paid tribute to Waldeck-Cooks, saying she had been part of the school community since Grade R in 2015.
"Cameron will be remembered for her kindness, warmth and determination. She approached life with resilience, quiet strength and a genuine care for those around her," the school said.
The Girls' College added that Waldeck-Cooks had made a lasting impact on those who knew her.
"Today, our community mourns the loss of a cherished student, daughter, sister and dear friend who was loved by all and will be remembered with great affection," the statement read.
St Stithians Boys’ College also paid tribute to Coetzee, describing him as a young man of strength, commitment and humility.
He was remembered as a talented sportsman who represented the school’s first-team rugby squad.
"Whether in the classroom, on the rugby field, in equestrian sport, or in service to others, he approached his passions with great enthusiasm."
The school added that the 19-year-old's warmth and charisma allowed him to form strong bonds with fellow learners, teammates, and coaches.
"He had the ability to instil confidence in others, offering encouragement when it was needed most and making those around him feel seen, valued, and supported."
St Stithians College said its thoughts and condolences remain with both families, friends, classmates and all members of the Saints community affected by the tragedy.
Police investigations continue with postmortems expected to assist authorities in determining the cause of death.
