The Gift of The Givers' Dr Imtiaz Sooliman says they have been making arrangements to that effect and is hopeful that the group can start their trek back soon.

The homecoming efforts happened after a group of South Africans were stuck on the Sudan side of the border without passports and were finally permitted to enter neighbouring Egypt on Wednesday after waiting for 26 hours.

Durban man Brandon Wallas, who built a makeshift shelter at the border, says it was gruelling.

"It was very nerve-wreaking not knowing whether we were going to get through or not. Luckily the South African ambassador was able to get us through with emergency passports which we did at the border.

"We are all now safe in the hotel. We are just waiting for more South Africans to come through which are on the way from another border post. Once they come we will all be on a flight home."

Sooliman says they hit a few snags along the way, delaying their entry into Egypt.

"As they were going to the border they used on Tuesday, the Sudanese traffic police closed the road and said there were too much of people.

“Indeed there were thousands of people at the border on Tuesday morning and there was too much traffic, so we had to redirect to another border. All our documentation and preparations were done for the border that we used on Tuesday.”
