Zimbabwe National Army spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Alphios Makotore said on Thursday the Parachute Regiment troops had been on an exercise at the rifle range near Inkomo Barracks, about 40km north of Harare, on Wednesday morning when the incident happened.

A bullet from an anti-aircraft gun missed the catch and travelled 7km to a Delamour High School, where children were gathered for the 9am assembly on the last day of the first term.

Makotore said 16-year-old Tawanda Masvipa died on the spot, while 13-year-old Tinashe Awali sustained an injury to the right arm.

Makotore said the incident was being investigated.

He added: "The Commander ZNA Lieutenant-General Philip Valerio Sibanda and all members of the army regret of this very unfortunate accident … and express their deepest condolences to the bereaved family."
