Strike looms at Home Affairs

Close to 6000 employees at the Department of Home Affairs are unhappy about the new working hours, set to commence on March 23.

The Public Servants Association says the new working hours will make Saturday an official working day and workers will incur additional travel and child care costs, while salaries remain the same.

PSA's acting assistant general manager, Leon Gilbert, said they have been engaging with the department to reach an amicable solution.

"Unfortunately the negotiations failed and at this stage we are at a conciliation phase. We have referred the matter to the bargaining council," he said.

Gilbert said failure to reach an agreement will result in strike action.
