Striking Numsa member dies after hit by car

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says one of its member were killed on the first day of its strike in the engineering sector.
The worker died on Tuesday.
Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the member was hit by a car.
“It is alleged that an angry motorist ploughed into a group of workers whilst they were waiting to be picked up from the pick-up point for the march in Wadeville, resulting in one of them being killed.
“It seems the motorist was angry because they were picketing and took the law into his own hands. His senseless actions resulted in the death of the worker.”
Hlubi-Majola says the union is concerned about attacks on striking workers.
“Some of our members have been attacked by members of the SAPS and in some cases, they have been attacked by private security companies.
“On Wednesday workers were shot at with rubber bullets whilst picketing at Diesel Electric. According to the report issued by union officials on the ground, the worker was shot with rubber bullets in the eye at point blank range.”
Hlubi-Majola says two other workers were seriously wounded at a company called KK Engineering when they were shot at a picket.
