Students march for more accommodation
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Students from several institutions will embark on a march to the offices of City of Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba on Thursday.
Students demand that Mashaba live up to his promise of fast-tracking accommodation for students from various institutions.
Students from the University of Johannesburg and the Central Johannesburg College are expected to join those from Wits University.
Mashaba allegedly pledged to convert dilapidated buildings in the Johannesburg city into student accommodation.
"As far as Wits is concerned, they will be allowed to gather at one point on the outskirts of the campus and march in Braamfontein - provided they have permission to do so from officials," says Wits spokesperson, Shirona Patel.
A requested was also sent that vice-chancellor, Adam Habib suspend academic activities, but Patel says their demand was not approved.
"Our lectures are underway. It is business as usual today. We do have additional security at all our access points to make sure that we don't get people from outside the campus coming onto our campuses."
