Sugar wage strike looms
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
About 1000 workers at eight farms belonging to Illovo in Kwa-Zulu Natal have threatened to embark on a strike.
The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) says negotations for a wage increase and other benefits have deadlocked.
General Secretary Katishi Masemola says workers have five demands.
"They want a 10% wage increase, extended maternity leave, extended pension fund and bonuses among others," he says.

Masemola says they will meet with Illovo to discuss picketing rules on Monday.
"Anytime from tomorrow we will issue a notice to strike. The employer has offered 5% for the wage increase, they have said they want a separate discussion with regards to maternity leave and provident funds, we are not comfortable with that. We want everything to be agreed to as a package to avert the strike," he says.
