Suspect due in Cape Town court for murder of DA candidate
A 37-year-old man is due to appear in a Western Cape court on Monday in connection with the murder of DA candidate Sinovuyo Dyokwe.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Andrè Traut, said the 37-year-old suspect was arrested in Parklands on Saturday during a joint operation by provincial detectives and the SAPS Special Task Force.
“The arrest follows an intensive investigation during which detectives acted on information received from members of the public regarding the suspect’s whereabouts,” said Traut.
“The suspect has been positively linked to the murder through the ongoing investigation.”
He said preliminary investigations indicated that Dyokwe had been allegedly subjected to extortion and was reportedly forced to pay protection money, but when she allegedly refused to continue making payments, threats were made against her.
"The investigation further revealed that on Friday, 20 June 2026, while returning home after participating in voter registration activities in Dunoon, she was allegedly followed before two armed suspects fatally shot her,” Traut added.
Police also seized a vehicle that was allegedly used in the commission of the crime, as well as seven cell phones that will form part of the investigation.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder and extortion.
“This arrest marks an important step towards justice for Sinovuyo’s loved ones and for the Dunoon community she had poured unwavering commitment and passion into,” said the DA’s JP Smith, who serves as the city’s MMC for Safety and Security.
“We urge the National Prosecuting Authority to build a water-tight case to ensure successful prosecution. We will be monitoring the legal process closely and hope that this suspect does not walk out of court and back onto the streets while this case proceeds,” he added.
