Police shot dead a suspected armed robber during a high-speed car chase and an ensuing shoot-out in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, Cape Town, on Monday morning.
Police were pursuing three suspects who had allegedly tried to rob a British American Tobacco employee offloading a delivery in the area.
"They demanded car keys from him and they took him to Willie Street where they tried to offload tobacco to a white Nissan bakkie," said Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana.
"While they were busy, a police vehicle that was patrolling the area was alerted by the members of the community about the robbery."
When the suspects spotted officers they sped away from the scene.
Police gave chase, cornering the suspects at a nearby block of flats.
"Two of the suspects jumped out of the vehicle and started shooting at the police. An exchange of fire ensued between the police and the suspects," said Kinana.
"One suspect was arrested, two 9mm pistols were recovered, and one suspect was fatally wounded and he died on the scene."
One of the suspected robbers was still at large.
