Suspended Sars investigations head resigns
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Sars head of Investigations Johann van Loggerenberg has resigned with immediate effect.
Sars says it has reached an amicable agreement with van Loggerenberg and all outstanding issues with him have been resolved.
Van Loggerenberg was being investigated for his alleged involvement in a rogue spy unit within the company.
“Sars has accepted his resignation and hereby confirm that the partying of ways was amicable and agreed to be in the best interest of Sars,” it said in a statement.
In September 2014 Van Loggerenberg was placed on special leave pending an investigation into his alleged misconduct.
In a statement Van Loggerenberg says his resignation was done in good faith and in the best interest of Sars and the country.
"I acknowledge that I erred in personal judgement concerning a matter in my private life and that this led to unforeseen consequences that were outside of my control," he said.
"I believe I need to take responsibility and accountability for this."
His resignation comes amid the suspension of Sars deputy commissioner Ivan Pillay.
