‘Swerving truck’ identified as cause of Midrand pile-up
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
Law enforcement have confirmed the cause of a multiple vehicle pile-up on the N1 in Midrand on Wednesday.
Two people died when their vehicles crashed into burning truck.
Several others were injured.
Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Obed Sibasa says the truck swerved to avoid a vehicle that had lost control.
“A driver with her daughters swerved across the lanes before the offramp, not seriously injured. The truck driver tried to avoid, swerved the other way across the centre barrier into oncoming vehicles or traffic.
“The truck burst into flames. Two burnt bodies were found in the vehicles,” says Sibasa.
He adds it will take a while to clear the debris.
“The N1 in Midrand, both south and north bound, around Allandale is completely blocked off.
“We don’t think the freeway will be opened in an hour or two, however all units on scene will deal with the reconstruction of the fatal crash.”
Motorists are urged to use alternative routes.

Johannesburg metro spokesperson Xolani Fihla says eight vehicles were involved in the crash. "At the moment, three lanes on the N1 north have been closed off and three lanes on the south bound have also been closed off.
