Tally of suspects arrested in Gauteng over school robberies reaches 95

Twenty-nine more suspects have been arrested in the past two weeks for crimes related to burglaries at schools in Gauteng according to the police's Mavela Masondo.

This means the total number of suspects arrested is now ninety-five. 


"The latest arrests were effected on Wednesday in Mabopane, Tshwane, where four suspects were found with music system and band instruments believed to be stolen during a burglary at Mabopane High School," says Masondo.

"Two more suspects were arrested in Loate, Tshwane, on Tuesday. They were found with doors,  

chairs, lights, and an electric fan. All these items were allegedly stolen during the burglary at HM Baloyi Secondary School in Winterveld."


The breakdown of the arrests per district is as follows:

  • Johannesburg (Including Soweto) 36
  • Tshwane 32
  • Sedibeng 11
  • Ekurhuleni 10
  • West Rand 6


The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has thanked the community of Gauteng for responding to his call for the community to work with the police in apprehending the school burglary suspects. 


"The community has played an imperative role in the arrests of these suspects and that is much appreciated. I believe that working together we can protect the future of our children from the criminals" said Provincial Commissioner.
