Taxi commuters told to steel themselves for higher fares
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The South African National Taxi Council says this is the time of the year it considers the fare hikes to take effect in June and July.
This year's fare increase comes amid a rapidly escalating fuel price.
The latest hike, which saw petrol go up by more than R2 a litre, kicked in om Wednesday.
Santaco's Bafana Magagula says taxi fares might have to increase more than would normally be the case.
"The difference is that this year the increase of fuel is very high, therefore there is a possibility that taxi fares might rise a bit higher than normal which might affect commuters a bit."
"Associations are always encouraged to give at least not less than seven days to give notice to commuters prior to actual increase date," says Magagula.
