Taxi ranks should be gun free zones: Vadi
Provincial transport MEC Ismail Vadi says there is no place for guns at taxi ranks.
The MEC briefed the media following several incidents of violence at taxi ranks in Soweto.
He has decided to extend the suspension of certain routes in Soweto due to ongoing violence between rival taxi associations.
Vadi plans to extend the suspension by another three months.
The provincial transport department shut down five taxi ranks and several routes in the area a month ago.
It comes after clashes between taxi associations Wata and Nanduwe.
Vadi says he is aware of the impact the shutdown has had on commuters, but believes their safety is paramount.
Vadi says he could review his decision should the unions sign an agreement.
"If they come with a signed agreement in a day or two, I can review my decision and allow operations to resume on Monday."
The MEC says he met with the two taxi associations on Wednesday.
He indicated they should have reached an agreement by now.
