Teachers, principle found to be negligent in drowning of Keamohetswe Seboko

A report into the drowning of 13-year-old Keamohetswe Seboko has found that the principal and four teachers were liable for the tragedy.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi handed the report into the teen’s death to his family in Eldorado Park on Friday.
Seboko was found floating in the swimming pool at Laerskool Bekker in Magaliesburg in January this year.
Lesufi says the department will now implement the recommendations put forward by the law firm appointed to investigating Seboko’s death.
“The law firm took the family through the report and the report basically recommend three critical things. One, obviously they feel that on the basis of the evidence that they have, they still feel that it was drowning, they didn’t find any bullying, murder or somebody being responsible as part of terms of reference.
“From our side, we wanted to check maybe somebody did something, somewhere and threw him inside and that evidence could not, and they used an academic study to establish that it was drowning.”
He says the principal and four teachers will be charged with negligence.
“Secondly, they found that from the principal and the four teachers, there were seriously inconsistent reports from the head of the school and four teachers who were assigned, either to monitor the situation, or to provide support during that incident.
“They got footage and based on the footage and based on statements that they got from the principal and four educators, they felt that something is not right and therefore recommending that the department should charge the principal and four teachers.”
Lesufi will meet with Laerskool Bekker’s School Governing Body on Saturday.
