Ten suspects are now in police custody in connection with a multi-million rand insurance murder-for-payout syndicate believed to have claimed the lives of at least ten people in Limpopo.

The investigation by the South African Police Service centres on former police sergeant Rachel Kutumela, who was arrested in October 2024 while still serving as a police officer.

Police say the case has been under investigation since her arrest, which led to the subsequent detention of several of her relatives and associates.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said investigators executed six warrants of arrest during the latest operation linked to what authorities believe is an organised criminal syndicate.

"We successfully executed six warrants of arrest for those that we believe were part of the 11-member syndicate involved in the insurance murder payouts in the Limpopo area."

According to police, the suspects allegedly targeted vulnerable and underprivileged individuals, including people with disabilities, convincing them to take out life and funeral insurance policies.

Authorities believe the victims were later murdered so that the suspects could claim the payouts.

"They were preying on vulnerable and underprivileged people. Some of them were even working for the suspects. They would gain their trust and convince them to take out funeral or life policies, and months later, those same individuals would be found murdered," Mathe explained.

Police say more than R10 million has already been paid out to members of the alleged syndicate.

Investigators believe the group operated as a coordinated network, with different suspects playing specific roles in the scheme, including taking out policies, receiving payouts, and distributing the money.

Mathe described the operation as a disturbing case in which several family members were allegedly involved.

"It looked like it was a family affair. We are talking about siblings and close relatives who were involved. They would insure someone, later that person would be murdered and then they would benefit from the cash payouts."

Authorities say one more suspect remains is yet to be arrested.

"For now, we’ve got ten in custody, and one suspect is still outstanding. If he does not hand himself over, we will circulate his picture to the media to assist us in locating him," Mathe added.

The suspects are expected to face charges including murder, fraud, money laundering, and defeating the ends of justice.
