The department says the latest patient is the wife of the KwaZulu-Natal man first diagnosed with Covid-19 following a ski trip to Italy.

The couple's two children were also tested and were cleared of virus.

In a statement, the department confirmed the KZN man is responding well to treatment.

"This morning, I had an opportunity to speak to the first confirmed patient. He was upbeat and jovial. I also spoke to the doctor who is treating him. She confirmed that this patient is responding well and is now asymptomatic,” Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in the statement.

South Africa reported its second case of the deadly Covid-19 on Saturday. The 39-year-old woman had travelled to Italy as part of a group with the first confirmed case. The second patient has since been isolated at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg.

On Saturday, the department announced that a 39-year-old woman from Gauteng tested positive for the virus.

All three patients were a part of a group of 10 who had traveled to Italy earlier this month.

"We confirm that we traced all 10 of these individuals. Nine of them had returned to South Africa. The tenth did not and is therefore not in our country," Mkize added.

"We expect the results of the other 6 group members who had traveled to Italy within the next 48 hours."
