Third suspect in Killarney R15m precious stones robbery nabbed
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed the arrest of a third suspect in connection with the Killarney precious stones robbery case.
In a statement, the IPID confirmed that the woman handed herself over to officers at the Edenvale Police Station on Monday and was expected to make her first appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
She is expected to face charges linked to the alleged robbery.
The woman's arrest t follows the court appearance on Monday of Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officer Adrian Mackenzie, and businessman Etienne van der Walt, who face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and fraud in connection with the alleged unlawful raid on a Killarney property in 2023.
The arrests were made following testimony by Witness K at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where she implicated the suspended EMPD chief, Julius Mkhwanazi, in the alleged theft.
The accused allegedly falsely presented themselves as members of a legitimate multi-disciplinary law enforcement team before stealing precious stones valued at nearly R15 million.
The matter was postponed to 16 July 2026 for a formal bail application.
Meanwhile, the IPID said investigations were continuing and that the arrest of another two suspects was imminent.
