The 19-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday in connection with the alleged kidnapping of 63-year-old Rachel Mary Saunders and 74-year-old Mr Rodney Saunders, near Vryheid on February 12.

The disappearance of the couple, who has British ties, triggered a terror alert from the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom issued an alert saying terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in South Africa.

"Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners such as shopping areas in major cities," the alert said.

However, Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha, says that at this stage there is no evidence that the crime is terror-related.

"We wish to advise that, there is nothing that points to an imminent threat by terrorists on our soil," says Ramovha.

Ramovha says the suspect is expected to appear at the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and will face charges of possession of suspected stolen property and kidnapping.

The search for the missing couple is ongoing.
