"There was a dispute between two taxi associations which resulted in random shooting and stoning of vehicles at a taxi rank in Newcastle," Major Thulani Zwane said.

Police were alerted of the clashes around 6.30am. Zwane said the reason for the dispute was unknown.

The men would appear in the Newcastle Magistrate's Court soon on charges of illegally discharging a firearm.

"Seven cartridges and spent bullets were found at the scene," Zwane said.

Eyewitness Dalila Quintal said when she was driving past the area around 7.15am, sections of Terminus Street were cordoned off by police.

"I saw people running away from that area, that's when I made a U-turn and drove away."

Quintal said police vehicles with flashing blue lights blocked the entrance to the taxi rank.

"They were not allowing them in or out of the rank."
