Gauteng police said they were investigating the murder of three people in Rabie Ridge, north of Johannesburg, following a shooting incident.
The shooting, believed to have been triggered by a domestic dispute, happened on Friday morning at Kanana Ext4.
Three other people were injured, including a police officer.
Gauteng Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspect, who was identified as a security officer, has since fled the scene.
"It is reported that the suspect had an argument with his girlfriend, whom he shot before shooting two more people in the house," said Nevhuhulwi.
"Upon responding to the scene, the police also came under fire, leading to two other women sustaining gunshot injuries."
Nevhuhulwi confirmed that a police officer was injured by shattered glass from the police vehicle that was shot at.
"The two women and the officer are receiving medical treatment in the hospital, while the first three victims were declared dead," she added.
