The Hawks in Gauteng arrested three police officers in Germiston for allegedly stealing R180,000 from a motorist on Monday.
The officers allegedly stopped the motorist and proceeded to search his car.
They then went to the victim's home, where they searched another car and the house.
While searching the house, the police found a plastic bag containing R180,000 cash and took the victim to Jeppe Police Station, where he was later released.
Sergeant Rofhiwa Sethari (38), Constable Livhuwani Oriel Matundu (36) and Fulufhelo Jonathan Matodzi (32) appeared in the Germiston Magistrate Court on Monday for theft and defeating the ends of justice.
They were released on R1,000 bail each.
"The matter was then reported to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation, which instituted an investigation which led to the apprehension of the three suspects on Monday," Hawks spokesperson Thatohatsi Mavimbela said.
The officers are expected back in court on 16 November.
