Three suspects arrested after armed confrontation with JMPD officers
Three suspects linked to alleged vehicle theft and signal jamming have been arrested following a shooting involving Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers in the Boskruin and Linden areas.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla the incident happened on Thursday, when JMPD Region C officers conducting routine patrols received an alert from the Vuma Tracking Camera system about a suspicious vehicle believed to be involved in criminal activity.
Fihla says officers immediately tracked the vehicle and spotted it travelling along Malibongwe Drive, then followed it to a BP Service Station at the corner of Malibongwe Drive and Central Street in Linden.
According to Fihla, when officers approached the vehicle, the driver attempted to flee while one of the passengers allegedly pointed a firearm at them, forcing officers to respond.
“The officers acted swiftly and decisively to neutralise the threat. The vehicle came to a stop shortly afterwards, with two suspects sustaining gunshot wounds, while a third suspect was apprehended unharmed at the scene,” Fihla said.
The injured suspects were transported under police guard to Helen Joseph Hospital for treatment while the third suspect was arrested and taken to Linden Police Station for processing.
The vehicle used by the suspects has been seized and booked into the Aeroton South African Police Service vehicle pound for further forensic investigation.
