Three taxis torched in Polokwane amid violent clashes between associations

Three taxis and a patrol vehicle were set alight in Polokwane on Friday morning amid violent clashes between the two local taxi associations.
The clashes followed a move by the Seshego Taxi Association to block the R81 road from the Mall of the North, preventing the Mankweng Taxi Association from operating in the area.
It is unclear what led to the decision to block the road.
The vehicles were torched in separate incidents between Devinish and Mandela drive, and Rissik and Boom Street.
Spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, Mike Maringa, says they plan to meet with the two associations.
“We are aware of the protest by the Mankweng Taxi Association happening on the R81 that has disrupted the traffic flow, we have our transport operations officials on the ground.
“It is a long-standing issue between the Mankweng and the Seshego Taxi Association that we tried to resolve in the past that led to the closure of the taxi rank.
“We have assured them that we will have a meeting, we are hoping to come out of the meeting with a solution,” says Maringa.
