Tow truckers embark on go-slow in Joburg, Midrand

Several companies in the tow trucking industry embarked on a go-slow on Wednesday morning.

The tow truckers, who are unhappy over what they believe to be an unfair distribution of work, will hand over a memorandum of demands at the offices of the Automobile Association.

 

Collin Tamine, who is from Tow Assist, says towing companies have not had an increase in ten years. 

 

“We are striking against the insurance industry for better rates. We haven’t had increases in the last ten years in the industry.” 

 

She says tow truck drivers have tried to reach out to the AA, but their plight has so far fallen on deaf ears.

“They just don’t come back to us, they don’t talk to us, they don’t agree with us. Their rates are not in line with today’s economy. 

 

“The industry keeps pushing us back and back. They don’t increase rates but manipulate them. They don’t want to take the towing industry forward.”

 

The Johannesburg metro police has warned motorists of traffic disruptions due to the go-slow.

 

Spokesperson Xolani Fihla says various roads in Joburg will be affected from 10:00. 

 

There will the disruptions on Samrand Road on the N1 south and Allandale Road in Midrand.

 

The R55 and Woodmead Drive should also be avoided.
