Trains collide in Lamontville, scores injured
Approximately 70 people were injured when two passenger train collided head-on with each other in Lamontville, south of Durban.
According to ER24, one of the trains partially derailed and the other train's coaches was severely damaged.
"Various passengers from the train were found either sitting or lying next to the train near the railway tracks. It is believed that they got out of the train shortly after the collision," ER24 said in a statement.
People were being treated for injuries ranging from lacerations, possible spinal injuries and soft tissue injuries.
"A medical triage station was erected on the scene where patients are assessed before they are removed from the site. Patients will be transported to Prince Mshiyeni and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospitals respectively."
There were no reports of fatalities or critical injuries at the time of publishing.
The exact cause for the collision is not yet known. Local authorities are on the scene.
