Transnet loses R250m from stolen fuel

State-owned enterprise Transnet bled over R250 million since 2019 in stolen fuel, according to Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan.

In written reply to parliamentary questions from Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Michele Clarke, Gordhan said the rail, logistics, port and pipeline company was hit by 143 incidents of theft in the 2019/20 financial year and 134 incidents in the 2020/21 year.
This tallies up to 20.4 million litres of fuel to the value of R255 million.
There were also close to 50 failed attempts of theft during those years.
Gordhan added there were some security measures put in place to prevent massive loss.
But Clarke believes the SOE must still account.
"We will be asking the committee chairperson of the DPE to ensure that Transnet come and do a presentation to the committee so we ca exercise proper oversight regarding these measures
"The frightening aspect of this as well is that out of 188 cases, there's only been one conviction," says Clarke.
It's unclear when the Transnet officials will appear before the parliamentary committee.
